Wednesday, March 26, 2008 The Canadian Flowers for Food Society Thanks Kettle Friendship Society
For immediate release Vancouver, BC - The Canadian Flowers for Food Society (CFFFS) would like to thank "We are very grateful to The Kettle Friendship Society for this trial period," said Flowers for Food Founder, Marrett Green. "Their donated space will immediately help to change the economic opportunities for many homeless persons living in Vancouver." The Flowers for Food Office Outreach program coordinates and trains qualifying "Flowers for Food (F4F) Inside Clients" (homeless persons) to make calls to downtown Vancouver businesses to ask if they would like to support the homeless with a donation of any size in exchange for a floral basket delivered to their office. Capers Whole Foods Market is donating both their floral discards and floral design team to help teach F4F Office Outreach inside clients how to professionally arrange their flowers. Inside Clients are given a template to read from as they make calls from their temporary residence or shelters. Rather than trying to make "cold sales calls" inside clients are encouraged to only direct businesses to the Canadian Flowers for Food Society Website www.flowersforfood.com where potential donors can get more information and donate online at their leisure. F4F is working with established shelters, treatment centres, and housing facilities to identify and qualify Inside Clients. Inside Clients must meet certain criteria including already completed or enrolled in drug rehabilitation and/or psychiatric care as well as living at or below the poverty line. The Canadian Flowers for Food Society's mandate is to provide opportunities for employment and bettering living to homeless persons and families in Canadian communities. The Canadian Flowers for Food Society collects floral waste from major flower growers and distributors to hand out to homeless persons; donations collected from these flowers on the streets, or in THE OFFICE FLORAL OUTREACH, help those in need to eat and live.

Tuesday, May 15, 2007 Flowers for Food nominated for BC Health Promotion Award For immediate release Vancouver, BC - Flowers for Food (F4F) is pleased to announce its nomination for this year's Medical Association's eighth annual Excellence in Health Promotion Awards, which recognizes an individual, a BC-based non-profit organization, and a BC-based company that are working to improve the health and safety of British Columbians. Nominated organizations must have demonstrated a concern for health and safety through specific actions or initiatives. These actions must show ingenuity and creativity and have resulted in actual changes with the potential for positive, long-term improvement. Flowers for Food, as an innovative program, collects discarded flowers from regional flower growers and distributors and passes them along to charitable organizations, such as the Mom Agape Street Ministry, or to individual homeless people in the downtown Vancouver core. Individuals are then able to raise a small amount of money for themselves by exchanging flowers in return to those who are generous enough to give a donation. Since the inception of Flowers for Food in 2006, the organization has doubled its list of donors and is rapidly growing, collecting and delivering thousands of flowers each week. "The Flowers for food charity was developed to help those living on the streets (mostly the elderly) with no means of income or chance of re-entering the workforce," said F4F founder, Marrett Green. "The program has grown considerably in its first year to the point that we now need help with transportation. We have new floral donors ready to give us tens of thousands of flowers, but we cannot accept them until we are able to transport these flowers. The project has outgrown my Honda Civic, and we will gladly accept help from anyone who wishes to donate their time and/or van or truck to a very good cause." Mom Agape Shop Manager, Mike Osborne, feels that Flowers for Food has proven itself to be incredibly successful for them. "We are 100% in favour of this project and are committed to helping it grow to its potential." The Mom Agape Street Ministry serves hundreds of downtown homeless people every night. The latest survey of homeless people in the GVRD (2006) revealed that almost 2200 people were on the streets at the beginning of 2005, double the figures of 2002. According to the Canadian Association of Food Banks, approximately 30,000 B.C. households used food banks in March 2005 and around 8% of Canadian households went hungry at some point that year.

Friday, December 08, 2006 FLOWERS FOR FOOD FEEDING VANCOUVER'S HOMELESS For immediate release Vancouver, BC - Flowers for Food is pleased to announce its official launch and immediate success in helping those in need in the Greater Vancouver area. Flowers for Food is an innovative pilot project that collects discarded flowers from regional flower growers and brokers and distributes them to charitable organizations and the homeless. "The program is only a few months old but has already proven itself successful on many levels with the most encouragement being the immediate benefits it has presented to those in need," said its founder, Mr. Marrett Green The most recent statistics reveal an increasing number of people living below the poverty line in Canada. And according to current data there are more homeless people in the Vancouver area this year living on the streets in almost every part of the region. The latest calculation (2006) of homeless people in Greater Vancouver revealed just under 2200 people were on the streets at the beginning of 2005. And that figure has doubled since 2002. According to the Canadian Association of Food Banks about 30,000 B.C. households used food banks in March 2005 Canadian Association of Food Banks and about eight per cent of Canadian households went hungry at some point that year. "We don't need to look at surveys, stats, and numbers; we only have to take a very brief look around us to see there are many more homeless people, including children, who really need help," says Green. And in addition to helping the homeless, Flowers for Food beautifies our city while creating awareness of a seriously overlooked and rapidly growing problem in BC." The Flowers for Food project is also assisting the Mom Agape Street Ministry for Homeless Youth, delivering hundreds of floral discards every week to their program. There are plans to expand this project, and to also introduce to charities across country, with the generosity of growers and auctioneers. Volunteers are always welcome.
